My interests, experience and values
Therapy is a highly personal process and knowing a bit about me will make it easier to decide if I’m the right therapist for you. I am passionate about supporting people to move from surviving to thriving, particularly in the family environment, and helping people manage interpersonal difficulties in families, intimate relationships, friendships and at work.
My own life experience and professional experience has helped me understand the struggles, challenges and opportunities of families facing chronic and life-threatening medical conditions. I am convinced that supporting the whole family is essential to a favourable outcome for the family, regardless of the outcome of the health condition.
I am particularly interested in working with adoptive families because of my own experience with adoption. I have been supporting the adoption community for more than 15 years, both professionally and informally. In this community, I am passionate about teaching my clients skills to improve their parenting, since adopted children do need particularly intentional parenting. I have made adoption my research focus, and completing my PhD has been the pinnacle of my research endeavours. I bring all this knowledge, experience, and dedication to the work I do with adoptive families in therapy, training and supervision of professionals who work with adoptees and adoptive families.
My professional background
I have more than 20 years’ experience as a psychologist. Before qualifying as a psychologist, I worked in non-profit organisations mostly in adult education. I offered life skills to unemployed and marginalised youth, rural women, returned exiles, refugees, and people living with mental health conditions. I also trained professionals in preventing and managing child abuse. I bring all that experience to my clinical work.
After qualifying as a psychologist, I worked extensively in higher education institutions, including Stellenbosch University, the University of Cape Town and Rhodes, offering therapy and running life skills and mentoring programmes for students and teaching and supervising post-graduate psychology students. I have been in private practice since 2017 and launched the Newlands Therapy Centre the following year.
My research interest is in the experiences of transracial adoptive families in South Africa, and developing and supporting psychotherapy and other professional services for all those in the adoption community. I completed my PhD at Stellenbosch University in 2023. My research explored the experiences of transracially adoptive families in South Africa. Here is a list of the articles I wrote on that research.
I have been involved in providing mental health training and supervision to post-graduate students and professionals and this has honed my knowledge of therapeutic interventions, especially evidenced-based and best practice models for specific client groups and mental health challenges.
